Neighborhood Meetings First Ward Neighborhood Association September, 5 2006 A regular meeting of the First Ward Neighborhood Association was held on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at the First Ward Community Recreation Center. The President and Secretary were present. The meeting was called to order at 7:09 p.m. Community Reports Center City Partners Neighborhood Liaison Report: Jayson Johnston Jayson gave a brief overview of the Charlotte SHOUT events planned in the month of September. The website for Charlotte SHOUT is www.charlotteshout.com. A full schedule of events can be found on the website. Highlights include Pride Jazz Festival, Gospel SHOUT, Blues, Brews and BBQ and Culinary Experience with famous chefs. Jayson announced that he has accepted a position in Matthews, effective October 1. A new liaison will come online at that time. Trinity Episcopal: Rev. Smokey Oates Bob sent out a roster of upcoming events at Trinity. They will be posted on the website as well. Please be aware of these dates as parking in the neighborhood will be affected. If people are parked in places they shouldn’t be, please notify Smokey at soats@tescharlotte.org. Police Report: Officer V Simpson (vsimpson@cmpd.org) From July 30 – August 29 there were 67 reported incidents (including 11 sexual offenses reported at the Family Services Center). Most frequent offense was larceny from auto, second highest was non-aggravated assault, non-larceny from auto was third. None of the aggravated assaults occurred in the residential area, instead they were focused in the bar district. This summer there was some reported gang related activity in Parkside Terrace. The gang unit was assigned to the area and the activity has subsided. Officer Simpson would like to reinstate the Neighborhood Watch Program in First Ward. CMPD needs at least 25% of the neighborhood involved to initiate the program. Requirements include naming a chairperson, block captains, steering committee, and start-up meeting. Bob will post information about organizing on the website. General Discussion First Ward Neighbors website went online today. Address is www.firstwardneighbors.org. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback, as the site is a work in progress. Charlotte Center City Partners held a meeting today about the baseball project. For more information please visit the website www.bringbackbaseball.com. A rally at Wachovia Plaza on October 11 is being planned. There is one board position available. Please send Bob an email if you are interested to serve. Trinity has started conversations with Parks and Rec about the City-owned parcel on Alexander Street. It is their hope that this lot along with the park could be used for basketball, baseball and potentially tennis courts that both the school and the community could use. The Gold Rush Blue Line will be suspended on October 1, 2006. The cost of operation has become too prohibitive to continue service as it has the lowest ridership of the trolleys. First Ward Community Social is tentatively planned for the first Saturday in October. Several homeowners associations budget for an annual event, there is a small amount of funding available for this year. The event will be held the first Saturday in October in the Garden District. OJ Jarrett needs volunteers to help organize the event. Ideas to increase attendance were discussed: There was a request to re-start the flyers announcing meetings as well as including an executive summary of the previous meeting. There was a request to hold a meeting with the Presidents of the Homeowners Associations to bring them back online and increase information distribution. We will also make attempts to serve refreshments at the meetings. Rev. Oats had an idea to reach out to retired residents in the neighborhood to see if they have some time available to contribute to the association. The meeting was adjourned at 8:09pm.
